A modified polyphenylene ether resin which is a product of the reaction of (A) 100 parts by weight of a polyphenylene ether whose backbone comprises structural units represented by the formula (1) with (B) 0.01 to 10.0 parts by weight of a modifier selected among a conjugated nonaromatic diene compound, a dienophile compound having one dienophile group, and a precursor for the diene or dienophile compound, and in which the number of transition structures contained therein represented by the formula (2) is smaller than 0.01 per 100 phenylene ether units represented by the formula (1). The resin is sufficiently functional and has a satisfactory balance between color tone/appearance and heat resistance/mechanical properties. In formula (1), (R1 and R4 each independently represents hydrogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, phenyl, aminoalkyl, or hydrocarbon-oxy; and R2 and R3 each independently represents hydrogen, primary or secondary lower alkyl, or phenyl. In formula (2) R1, R2, R3, and R4 are the same as in formula (1).
