SHIPBOARD BIOMECHANICAL OIL WATER SEPARATOR

Disclosed is a biomechanical apparatus (1) and method for the continuous phase separation and biological treatment of ship bilgewater (6) contaminated with petroleum and biodegradable materials. The apparatus includes a pumping system (13) attached to the bilge or waste oil holding tank (20) for removing the biodegradable material(s) located in the bilge waste aqueous and non-aqueous phases and a microbiological chamber (21) for treating the contaminated bilgewater (6). The microbiological chamber (21) preferably includes petroleum- and hazardous material-degrading microorganisms. In operation, the apparatus combines functions to physically separate and microbiologically destroy petroleum hydrocarbons in the water and monitor and direct the discharge of the processed water overboard or recirculation back into the bilge compartment (2). The separated free-product is removed to a holding tank (4) for off-site disposal, recycling or on-board incineration.
