IMPROVED STATOR ESPECIALLY ADAPTED FOR USE IN A HELICOIDAL PUMP/MOTOR AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME

A method of making a stator (102) for a helicoidal pump/motor formed by a network of fibers (152, 154) encapsalated in an elastomer is provided forming a core (108) by laying up elastomeric performs (158) into helical grooves of a mandrel (200) and wrapping elastomeric sheet around the helical projections formed in the mandrel (200). Successive strips of calendared rubber/wire cloth (162-170) are then laid up in the grooves to as to fill the grooves which are then wrapped with another layer of calendared rubber/wire cloth (171). The assembly is then filament wound with reinforcing cards (172-174) and compression cured to bond the elastomeric components into a unitary element. The element (108) is then placed in a stator housing (106) and bonded to the housing with an elastomer whic is injected between the element and the housing.
