Aromatic amide compounds of the general formula (I), pharmaceutically acceptable salts of the same, or hydrates of both, (wherein Z1 and Z2 are each CH or N; R is hydrogen or alkyl; and Ar is optionally substituted phenyl, pyridyl, or the like). The invention provides compounds which exhibit a potent inhibitory effect on glycogen synthase kinase 3ss (GSK-3ss) and are useful as preventive or therapeutic drugs for diabetes, complications of diabetes, Alzheimer dementia, neurodegenerative diseases (such as AIDS encephalopathy, Huntington disease, Parkinson disease, and cerebral ischemia), manic-depressive psychosis, or the like, or as immunopotentiators.
