Image processing method and apparatus capable of providing a high quality image having no blur and little noticeable unnaturalness when performing a number-of-pixels conversion of a character image including thin lines. A number-of-pixels conversion of the pixels constituting line segments in an input original image signal is performed at a number-of-pixels change rate designated for at least one of the row and column directions in the matrix. During such number-of-pixels conversion, the converted line-segment-constituting pixels corresponding to those in the input original image signal are adjusted such that they are consecutive pixels the number of which is determined based on the numbe-of-pixels conversion rate.
