A memory card (18) inserted in a slot (16) stores a plurality of decoding programs corresponding to a plurality of types of compression. A CPU (20) searches a RAM (22a) for the decoding program corresponding to the type of compression of music data to be played back. If the search fails, the CPU (20) transfers the decoding program from the memory card (18) to the RAM (22a). If the decoding program corresponding to the type of compression of the music data to be played back is in the RAM (22a), the same decoding program will not be transferred. The DSP (22) decodes the music data according to the decoding program stored in the RAM (22a).
