A fuel cell system made up of a plurality of fuel cells (249). Each cell includes a fuel inlet (261,263,265), an oxidant inlet (262,264,266), a fuel side product outlet (253,254,255) and an oxidant side product outlet (256,257,258). A common fuel supply line (251) is provided for the fuel inlets (261,263,265). A common oxidant supply line (252) is provided for the oxidant inlets (262,264,266). A common product purging mechanisms (240) is coupled to the outlets (253-258) for purging the same of unused fuel, unused oxidant, fuel side product and oxidant side product. The product purging mechanism (240) includes valving structure operable to selectively and independently open the outlets (253-258) of a given cell. A method for operating such a fuel cell system is also disclosed. |
