摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system for color separation and synthesis in which bright display with good tone can be realized without depending on the characteristics of dichroic thin films and in which the dependence of cut wavelengths on the polarization direction and on fluctuation in the incident angle can be decreased, and to provide a liquid crystal display device having the optical system for color separation and synthesis. SOLUTION: The optical system for color separation and synthesis consisting of a plurality of prisms has a first prism disposed in such a manner that the incident light is made to enter through a first face and reflected by the dichroic film formed on a second face to produce specified color component light while the rest of the color component light is transmitted and that the specified color component light reflected by the dichroic film is further totally reflected by the first face to pass through a third face. The dichroic film formed on the second face of the first prism reflects green light and transmits light of other colors.
