PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the occurrence of hunting due to an excessive drive at the time of correcting a backlash, in an automatic focusing device used for a still camera and a video camera, etc. SOLUTION: In the case of necessitating reversing a photographic lens in a driving direction at the process of focusing the photographic lens while repeatedly performing a focus detecting operation by a focus detecting means and a photographic lens driving operation by a lens driving/controlling means, a backlash correcting operation for correcting the driving quantity of the photographic lens is performed, and whether or not the photographic lens is excessively driven in accordance with the backlash correcting operation is decided by a backlash correction inhibiting means based on the focus detection results by the focus detecting means obtained before/after the backlash correcting operation is performed by the backlash correcting means, and in the case the photographic lens is excessively driven, the backlash correcting operation by the backlash correcting means is inhibited. |
