PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform improved in the stability of refractive index distribution in the longitudinal direction. SOLUTION: This method for producing an optical fiber preform improved in the stability of refractive index distribution in the longitudinal direction comprises the following process: the position in the growth axial direction on the lower end of an optical fiber preform 4 is sensed with a relevant mechanism 8, and according to the position information thus obtained, the mechanism 8 is adjusted by a relevant moving mechanism so that the mechanism 8 comes to an optimum position, thus enabling the status of the lower end of the preform 4 to grasped; the position in the horizontal direction of the growth axis of the preform 4 is sensed with a CCD camera 25, and according to the information thus obtained, the pull rate of the preform 4 is controlled or is kept constant and the position in the horizontal direction of the burner 5 for the core is controlled by a burner moving mechanism.
