PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase difference plate easily producible while functioning as a 1/4 wavelength plate based on a completely different principle from that of a conventional phase difference plate. SOLUTION: A medium provide with an optical recording layer having photoinduced double refractivity is used as an optical recording medium 14. By irradiating the optical recording medium 14 with elliptically polarized light as object light 43, and by simultaneously irradiating the optical recording medium 14 with linearly polarized light as reference light 44, the elliptically polarized light of the object light 43 and the linearly polarized light of the reference light 44 are made to be interfered in the optical recording layer of the optical recording medium 14, then an anistropic grating is recorded on the optical recording layer. Thus, the optical recording medium 14 recorded with the anistropic grating functions as a 1/4 wavelength plate. When the irradiation of the same linearly polarized light as that of the reference light 44 at recording is performed, the same elliptically polarized light as that of the object light 43 can be read as diffracted light, and when the irradiation of the same elliptically polarized light as that of the object light 43 at recording is performed, the same linearly polarized light can be read as a diffracted light as that of the reference light 44 on the optical path of the reference light 44 at recording. For that reason, the optical recording medium 14 can be used as a phase difference plate which transforms the elliptically polarized light which passed an STN LCD cell into the linearly polarized light. |
