The automobile has its onboard electrical network supplied with electrical energy via a fuel cell system (B), both during the operation of the automobile and when the automobile is stood still, with the hydrogen fuel required by the fuel cell system obtained from the fuel in the fuel tank (T) used for driving the automobile engine. An energy management system (EM) incorporates a monitoring device (U), receiving data from the fuel tank and controlling the function of the fuel cell system to ensure the fuel supply for the engine for reaching a given target destination,e.g. a re-fueling station, using the calculated residual range and the actual position of the vehicle provided by an onboard navigation device (NS).
