PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transmit inputted photograph information, the present position of an automobile, and image information representing its peripheral areas, to an external communication device. SOLUTION: This navigation unit 1 transmits map image information representing map images, etc., of peripheral areas of the present position of the automobile mounted with this unit to the communication device 9 if the device 9 with which it is in communication is not equipped with map data. The image information includes information such as symbol images enabling the present position of the unit 1 to be identified. The data format of the image information is one easily reproducible by a common personal computer.
