The security system has a main ignition switch (2) which is activated by the ignition key and which reads the security code associated with the ignition key. The switch action activates an anti-theft circuit (6) and an engine control circuit (7), both of which control the engine function. The circuit is improved by preventing total locking of the system through momentary loss of supply voltage e.g. through temporary loss of power when the starter motor drains the battery voltage. The control circuit includes a switch off mode when the ignition key is withdrawn from the switch. This switch off mode is blocked if the ignition key is left in the lock and therefore covers the momentary losses of supply voltage.
