A normally tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive tape comprises a thin flexible backing member coated with a copolymer of monomers consisting essentially of (a) monomeric acrylic acid ester or esters of one or more non-tertiary alkyl alcohols the molecules of which have from one to 14 carbon atoms and including an alcohol having at least 6 carbon atoms, the average being 4 to 12 carbon atoms, a major proportion of the said molecules having a carbon chain of at least four carbon atoms terminating at the hydroxyl oxygen atom, said chain containing at least half the total number of carbon atoms in the molecule, the said acrylic acid ester or esters being per se polymerizable to a stretchable, elastic adhesive mass; and (b) at least one monomer copolymerizable with the said acrylic acid esters or esters, and selected from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile in an amount by weight within the range of 3 to 12% of the total of monomers (a) and (b). Preferred copolymers contain 92 to 96 parts by weight iso-octyl acrylate and 8 to 4 parts acrylic acid; and 94 to 97 parts by weight iso-octyl acrylate and 6 to 3 parts acrylamide. Non-tertiary alkyl alcohols specified are methyl, ethyl, propyl, tetradecyl, 1-methyl pentanol, 2- methyl pentanol, 3-methyl pentanol, 2-ethyl butanol, 3,5,5 - trimethylhexanol, heptanol - 3, iso-octanol, n-decanol, and dodecanol Specified backing members are " Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark), cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, plasticizedvinyl acetate-vinyl chloride, ethylene glycol-terephthalic acid poly-. ester, which may be given a primer coating, treated or untreated paper, cloth and wadding. The adhesive composition may also contain copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers such as ethylacrylate, vinyl chloride, various methacrylate esters, butadiene, isoprene and diallyl phthalate. |
