The invention relates to a transfer device for use in a packaging machine, comprising a plurality of receptacles conveyed on a closed-loop continuous track. A product can be introduced into a respective supply zone of said receptacle and said product can be withdrawn therefrom in a withdrawal zone. A plurality of receptacles are combined to one train, said trains being adjustable relative to one another in the direction of conveyance. The aim of the invention is to provide a transfer device wherein the movements of the receptacle can be flexibly adapted and which requires only little space. To this end, the track is composed by a single continuous guide in which the trains are received so as to be displaceable in the longitudinal direction. A plurality of drive units are mounted along said guide and are controlled individually. Every train engages with said drive units one after the other when passing the track so that every train can be displaced along the guide at speeds that differ from section to section.
