PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the easy and economical synthesis of an MCM-41 molecular sieve of medium pore diameter having high hydrothermal stability and surface area and useful as a catalyst or a carrier for catalyst. SOLUTION: A solution of a long-chain quaternary ammonium salt is mixed with a solution of a short-chain quaternary ammonium salt or a solution of an alkali metal salt, a silicon source is added to the mixture, the product is slowly acidified to pH 9.5-10.0 by the addition of a dilute solution of a mineral acid, the obtained gel is subjected to hydrothermal treatment at 100-150 deg.C for 2-4 days, the solid product is separated from the reaction solution by filtration and the separated product is washed and dried to obtain the objective molecular sieve.
