The saw has a motor and drive casing (12) and a reciprocally moving rod (16) driving the saw blade (14) and a baseplate (18) to which it may be attached. There is a guard device (20) to protect the user against being cut by the saw. This is in the form of a slim rod running parallel to the saw blade and aligned with the row of teeth (15). The guard device may project from the casing above the baseplate, ending with a clearance from the baseplate. The dia. of the guard pin is no greater and preferably smaller than the thickness of the saw blade. It may be clamped between the two sides of the casing shell.
