PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a profitable method for producing a dihydroxydiarylalkane. SOLUTION: This method for producing the dihydroxydiarylalkane, comprising a carbonyl compound with an excessive amount of phenol in the presence of a mercapto group-containing compound and a catalyst such as a strongly acidic ion exchange resin catalyst, characterized by containing a process for separating the dihydroxydiarylalkane from the obtained dihydroxydiarylalkane reaction solution containing the mercapto group-containing compounds and/or sulfur-containing compounds except the mercapto group-containing compounds, continuously charging the residual solution and/or the concentrated solution of the residual solution into a reaction medium heated at 200 to 350 deg.C in the presence of a basic catalyst to cleave the by-products into the phenol and the alkenylphenol, distilling the pherol and the alkenylphenol outside the reaction system, and then bringing the distillate into contact with an acidic catalyst to rebind the phenol to the alkenylphenol. |
