PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an additive capable of inhibiting an increase in the viscosity of a coating material, agglomeration by the reaction with other components and the like and having good usability, a coating material added with the same, and provide a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The additive for a water-soluble coating material comprises an inorganic phyllosilicate and an anionic surface active agent. The coating material uses the additive. Further, the method of manufacturing the coating material comprises preliminarily treating a base phyllosilicate and an anionic surface active agent.
