The tool (1) first cuts to a depth less than the wall thickness, around the pipe (4). In a following cut around the pipe, it is completely separated. An Independent claim is included for the equipment used in the method, which is a circular saw blade or disc cutter. Preferred features: The first cut penetrates to half the wall thickness. The tool is guided externally on the pipe. It circumscribes the fixed pipe; alternatively the tool is fixed and the pipe is rotated. Feed and tool rotation are in the same direction, i.e. climb-milling is practiced. The direction of rotation of the tool or of the feed is reversed relative to the initial direction, when cutting through completely. The feed direction (6) is reversed.
