PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely and efficiently separating and obtaining a racemic and a meso isomer from an mixture of the racemic and the meso isomer of a low temperature active azo compound. SOLUTION: This method for separating the recemic modification from the meso-isomer is characterized by treating the mixture of the recemic modification with the meso-isomer of a compound represented by the general formula [I] (wherein, R1 and R2 are each independently a lower alkyl group or cyano group and denote each a different group; R3 and R4 denote each independently a lower alkyl group; and R5 denotes hydrogen atom or a lower alkoxy group) with a water-soluble organic solvent.
