The appts includes a device for sensing a current wave- shape in at least one of the supply lines, . The current wave-shape relative characteristics are a function of a commutation angle between the rotor and stator windings. The commutation angle provides an indication of whether the commutation is at an optimal angle, or lagging, or leading. The current wave-shape is distorted by ripple or transients on the supply lines. A commutation device is provided for successively energising the respective stator windings. A processor is used for deriving commutation angle information from the sensing device and for controlling operation of the commutation device on the basis of the information derived to adjust the commutation angle so it is optimal.
