The invention relates to a method for monitoring the handling characteristics of a rail vehicle, whereby the acceleration behaviour of at least one vehicle component is monitored. To achieve this, a frequency distribution of the acceleration values of at least one vehicle component is detected over a predeterminable time period (t) and the frequency (H) of at least one acceleration value (a) is compared with a predeterminable frequency value and an event to be taken into consideration is identified, based on the relation between the frequency (H) of the acceleration value(s) (a) and the predetermined frequency value (H54). The invention also relates to a device for monitoring the handling characteristics of a rail vehicle. Said device comprises means for detecting the acceleration behaviour of at least one vehicle component of the rail vehicle, said means being used to detect a frequency distribution of acceleration values (a) over a predeterminable time period (t) and to compare the frequency (H) of at least one acceleration value (a) with a predeterminable frequency value (H54). If the predeterminable frequency value (H54) is attained, or if a predeterminable approximation to and/or deviation from said frequency value (H54) is/are attained, an event to be taken into consideration can be identified.
