PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refreshing agent imparting to a pharmaceutical composition and a mucosa application composition refreshing feeling over a long period without giving bad odor and local irritation. SOLUTION: The refreshing agent is composed of a compound of formula (1) (R1, R2 and R3 are each H or a (substituted)alkyl group) (e.g. caffeine) or its pharmacologically permissible salt. Refreshing feeling can be effectively applied to a pharmaceutical composition and a mucosa-application composition (a mucosa-application preparation such as an aqueous or non-aqueous ophthalmia solution (eye drop and collyrium), collunarium, agent for contact lens and eye ointment). The mucosa-application preparation contains various components such as decongestant, ocular muscle regulating component, anti-inflammatory agent or astringent agent, antihistaminic agent, antiallergic agent, antibacterial agent, sulfa drugs, vitamins and amino acids.
