A system and method for creating, editing, and distributing stereoscopic images is disclosed. The system and emthod are adapted to provide a registered complementary pair of stereoscopic images suitable for viewing a three dimensional image using a preselected viewing format. This is accomplished using templates stored in a memory device. A processor selects an appropriate template based on a selection of the viewing format and registers the stereoscopically complementary image pair for that format using the template. Registration may involve alignment, keying or a combination of alignment and keying of the images. Finally, the system and method provide for the distribution of registered stereoscopically complementary pairs of images suitable for a variety of different viewing formats. The invention has the advantage that a variety of different viewing formats can be accommodated while at the same time user manipulation of the image pairs is minimized to ensure a positive viewing experience. |
