PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a treatment method of ammonia-containing water for making it harmless by efficiently oxidizing and decomposing ammonia contained in waste water from a chemical plant, and waste water discharged at the time of regeneration of an ion exchange device for condensed water treatment at a power plant, etc., under a mild condition of <1 MPa.G pressure. SOLUTION: When the ammonia-containing water is brought into contact with a catalyst under <1 MPa.G pressure together with oxygen-containing gas to oxidize and decompose ammonia in the ammonia-containing water, an upward counterflow type reaction device making gas and liquid flow in parallel is used for liquid passing treatment under such conditions that a linear speed of the ammonia-containing water is >=20 m/h in an empty tower standard and also a volume ratio G/L of a flow volume (G) of oxygen-containing gas, expressed in terms of a standard state to a flow volume (L) of the ammonia- containing water is >=2.
