The invention relates to a process for closing a stocking or sock toe on a circular knitting machine, which comprises the optional knitting of a number of stitch rows on all the machine needles, knitting the toe bag on a first arc of needles (A) and the two- step passing of the initial free edge of the toe bag onto the opposing arc of needles (B), for the tubular knitting of the stocking body, said initial free edge (Ti) being caught and displaced pneumatically near the arc of needles (B) whereon it will be transferred, and then progressively moved outwards the circle of needles by driving some mechanical means. According to the process claimed by the invention, the mechanism for closing the stocking and sock toe comprises means for controlling a first arc of needles (A) for knitting the toe bag and means for passing the initial free edge (Ti) thereof onto the opposing arc of needles (B), said means consisting of pneumatic means for tensioning the knitted fabric and bringing the initial free edge (Ti) of the toe bag fabric close to the needles (B) whereon it will be passed, and also mechanical means for passing the initial free edge over the ends of said needles.
