A transaction processing system is provided in which transaction tasks can be modified in real-time without interrupting the operation of the transaction processing system. The system includes intelligent agents [5] that perform selective transaction retrieval from a transaction stream. An agent command and control center [29] enables users to quickly and conveniently construct intelligent agents using simple visual programming techniques. The agents are capable of "eavesdropping" on a transaction stream and retrieving transactions from the stream that fit a given profile. Agents can preferably be modified while they are executing and do not interfere with the underlying transaction processing system. After an agent retrieves a transaction, an Action Manager [26] processes the transaction. Users define the processing that is carried out on transactions preferably using a workflow diagram [22]. The action manager has a visual programming interface that enables users to easily create workflow diagrams by dragging, dropping, and connecting blocks that represent sources of data, analyses, decisions, and actions. The action manager also permits users to redefine workflow while the system is running. |
