PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer in which the replacing time of a ribbon cartridge is independent of the imaging time and a ribbon unit is arranged conveniently without increasing the size. SOLUTION: The thermal printer comprises a first carriage (3) being moved on a scanning rail (12) by a first drive means, a second carriage (4) being moved on a scanning rail (13) common to the scanning rail (12) by a second drive means, a first ribbon unit (7) disposed on one end side of the scanning rail (12) and loaded with a plurality of ribbon cartridges for replacement being loaded to the first carriage (3), and a second ribbon unit (8) disposed on the other end side of the scanning rail (13) and loaded with a plurality of ribbon cartridges for replacement being loaded to the second carriage (4).
