PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain smooth sliding operation by easily completely making the axes of a piston and a cylinder coincide with each other when the operating annular piston and the annular cylinder become large when a work becomes large in a diaphragm type chuck device of a machine tool. SOLUTION: For settling the problem, this diaphragm type chuck device constituted so as to chuck the work by resiliency of a diaphragm 5 itself, is constituted so as to operate the diaphragm 5 by the annular piston 4 and the annular cylinder 3. The piston and the diaphragm are formed as individually displaceable independent members. The piston 4 is provided with a fluid pressure receiving surface 16 for forcedly and expansively opening a chuck mechanism part 9 of the diaphragm 5 and a fluid pressure receiving surface 18 for retreating the piston 4 when the chuck mechanism part 9 of the diaphragm 5 closes by the resiliency of the diaphragm 5.
