PURPOSE: A steering shaft of a vehicle is provided to inhibit a driver from being injured by re-collision with a steering wheel by installing a spring inside a lower tube and preventing an upper shaft from being sprung up by the return action of the compressed spring. CONSTITUTION: A spring(2) is inserted into a lower tube(1), and an upper shaft(3) supported by the spring is fitted into the lower tube. A stopper(4) is set on the inside of the upper tube, and plural protrusions(3a) are formed in an axial direction on the upper shaft having contact with the stopper. The stopper is hinged(5) to the lower tube, and each groove(1a,4a) is formed at the stopper and the lower tube. A spring having both ends set to the grooves is mounted to rotate the stopper centering on the hinge within a specific range. Plural inclined surfaces(3b) are formed between the protrusions, corresponding to inclined surfaces of the stopper. The stopper is rotated centering on the hinge by sliding along the inclined surfaces(3b), and the upper shaft is moved into the lower tube. In occurrence of a collision accident, the upper body of a driver may be collided with a steering wheel. The upper shaft is moved downward to compress the spring(2) and to absorb a shock. Then, the spring is returned to the original state. Herein, the stopper is hung to the protrusions. Thereby, the upper shaft is not moved upward and the steering wheel is not collided with the driver again.
