PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive insoluble electrode as a substitute for a platinum metal oxide, excellent in corrosion resistance even when sujected to electrolysis at a high current density of >=100 A/dm2 and capable of being used for a long time. SOLUTION: This insoluble electrode has a metallic phase consisting of Ni and Mo on a metallic substrate formed of valve metal. Alternatively, the electrode has a ceramic phase consisting of one or >=2 kinds of metal borides, nitrides and carbides of one or >=2 kinds among W, Cr, Ti, Mo and Ni and cermet formed by a metallic binder layer of Ni and Mo. Further, the electrode contains 10-90 mass % ceramic layer and 90-10 mass % metallic binder layer, and at least the uppermost surface layer having 10μm thickness of the coating layer is coated with the oxides of the metallic phase or metallic binder phase.
