PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means to improve the contrast ratio in a projection type liquid crystal display device using a TN liquid crystal. SOLUTION: The projection type liquid crystal display device 34 is equipped with a light source 53, liquid crystal light valves 48, 49, 50, deflecting means for light to incline the optical axis when light is made to enter the liquid crystal cells 48b, 49b, 50b from the normal direction of the entrance faces of the liquid crystal cells to the bright direction side intrinsic to the respective liquid crystal cells, and a projection lens system 52. The deflecting means for light includes microprism arrays or deviated microlens arrays fixed in the entrance side of the liquid crystal cells 48b, 49b, 50b, and a dichroic mirror 37 and reflection mirrors 40, 44 disposed as rotatable between the light source 53 and the liquid crystal light valves 48, 49, 50. |
