PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture reproducing method capable of displaying a picture with high display quality. SOLUTION: When a picture is reproduced with a display device 8 having plural pixels, the average of levels of entire pixel signals in a picture signal g0 including a pixel signal expressing information for every pixel is calculated as an average input luminance signal level G in an average signal level calculating circuit 1. Next, an input signal-to-output luminance characteristic expressing the change of luminance of a pixel with respect to the level of the pixel signal is set in accordance with the average input luminance signal level G in an input-to-output luminance characteristic setting circuit 2 and the picture signal g0 is corrected so as to satisfy the set input signal-to-output luminance characteristic in a signal correcting part 4. Moreover, the maximum output luminance of the pixels of the display device 8 is adjusted in accordance with the average input luminance signal level G in a maximum output luminance adjusting circuit 3.
