A mouth hygiene composition effective in treating halitosis is disclosed. The composition in the form of a preparation comprises: i) a chelate comprising a metal ion and an amino acid and having the general formula as shown wherein M is a metal ion is preferably Zn2+(present in an amount of from 0.05 to 2.0 weight percent), but can be selected from Sn2+, Cu2+ and Ag2+, and R is H or a side chain of a biologically acceptable amino acid, the chelate being controllably releasable into the oral cavity of a subject, ii) a saliva-inducing agent effective in producing saliva in the oral cavity, said saliva-inducing agent being further effective in stimulating a controlled release of the chelate, iii) a flavouring agent effective in reducing and/or eliminating any trace of an astringent taste associated with the chelate, and iv) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
