PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in surface smoothness, dispersion properties of a non-magnetic layer, electromagnetic transducing characteristics, running durability and also in improvement of output deterioration under the circumstance of low moisture. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium having a non-magnetic layer provided on at least one surface of a non-magnetic substrate and formed by dispersing inorganic pigment into a bonding agent and a magnetic layer provided on the non-magnetic layer is characterized in that an aromatic compound including carboxyl groups in its chemical structure and having a molecular weight of 200 or less is contained in the non-magnetic layer.
