PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize an image reader by making it possible to read an original beyond an end sensor even though the end sensor is provided within a reading range of an FBS and also to make it possible to accurately stop a carriage at a reading position of an ADF even in the case of performing reading beyond the end sensor. SOLUTION: In the image reader for reading an image by using the carriage that is common for the ADF and the FBS, a home sensor is provided at the carriage standby position for the FBS, and the end sensor is provided within the reading rage of the FBS. When an original length does not reach the end sensor in the case of reading the original with the FBS, reading is stopped with an on signal of the end sensor, the carriage is decelerated, the position of the carriage is confirmed with an off signal, and the carriage is made to run to a reading position of the ADF. When the original length goes beyond the end sensor, reading continues beyond the end sensor, the carriage is reversed after the reading is finished, the position of the carriage is confirmed by the end sensor, the carriage is reversed again and the carriage is made to run to the reading position of the ADF.
