PURPOSE: An automatic response apparatus and method during absence corresponding to a calling number is provided to improve an automatic response function of a telephone by registering a plurality of automatic response messages corresponding to telephone numbers, detecting the calling number when being terminated, comparing the detected calling number with the registered telephone numbers, and providing a special automatic response message corresponding to the calling number when the calling number is the registered telephone number. CONSTITUTION: A CPU detects a ring signal(120), counts the number of ring signal, and converts a current mode into an automatic response mode when the number of setting is detected. The CPU detects a calling number through a calling number detecting circuit(122). The CPU checks whether the detected calling number is a registered telephone(124). If the detected calling number is not the registered telephone, the CPU outputs a general automatic response message(128). If the detected calling number is the registered telephone, the CPU reads a message corresponding to the calling number from a storing unit and outputs a special automatic response message(126).
