PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a topped column member eliminating the need for a backing strip at a column head to prevent rainwater from collecting in the column head, and capable of preventing workers and articles from dropping into an erected column steel pipe. SOLUTION: A steel top panel 10 is inserted into an opening in the column head 1b of a steel structure column member, with the upper surface of the top panel projecting from the end face of the column head; the outer periphery of the top panel is welded in place and the end of the column head and the top panel are machined. The machined surface of the top panel is used as a surface 11 against which a backing strip 5 at the pedestal part of an upper column member abuts.
