MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium having high C/N in high density magnetic recording (especially using a MR head for reproduction). SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a lower layer containing a non-magnetic powder and a bonding agent and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a bonding agent on a non-magnetic flexible substrate in this order. The magnetic layer has 0.02-0.2μm average thickness d and the ferromagnetic powder contained in the magnetic layer is a plate-like hexagonal ferrite magnetic powder having <=40 nm average plate diameter. The non-magnetic powder contained in the lower layer is an acicular inorganic powder having <=0.2μm average major axis length, and the planar ratio of the ferromagnetic powder <= the acicular ratio of the inorganic powder in the lower layer is satisfied.
