PURPOSE: A screen saver using high definition moving picture and a method thereof are provided to implement a screen saving function using the high definition moving pictures by enabling users to download various moving pictures and a software decoder on line and to use them as screen savers. CONSTITUTION: A supplier provides high definition moving picture data, compressed in an MPEG-2/4 method, and a software decoder in order to regenerate the moving picture data. A user downloads the software decoder and installs them into a user PC. Then the user downloads the various moving pictures provided from the supplier so that an existing screen saving function can be implemented as these high definition moving pictures are regenerated.
