PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus capable of properly exposing a main object without being influenced by background conditions. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with optical systems 150-152 capable of forming an image of the object on an image-forming plane, an image-forming elements 161 placed on the image-forming plane, a stroboscope 5 for lighting the object, a dividing part 31 for dividing an electric signal, which has been photo-electric converted by the image-forming elements 161, into those for plural areas, a detection part 1 for detecting voltages or charges of each area divided by the dividing part 31, a histogram calculation part 41 for calculating a histogram of a brightness distribution of the picked-up image based on the detection value of each area detected by the detection part 1, a selection part 3 for selecting the detection values of effective areas according to a histogram pattern of the brightness distribution calculated by the histogram arithmetic part, and an emitted light quantity calculation part 4 for obtaining a light quantity to be emitted by the stroboscope based only on the detection signals of the areas selected by the selection part 3. |
