A pharmaceutical composition containing a therapeutically effective amount of a beta-adrenergic agonist together with a pharmaceutically acceptable bioadhesive for treating dysmenorrhea and premature labour

A composition comprising a beta-adrenergic agonist in a bioadhesive carrier is described. Preferably, the composition comprises terbutaline (5-[2-[(1,1-dimethylethyl)amino]-1-hydroxyethyl]-1,3-benzenediol) at a concentration of 0.1% to 0.4% weight/weight in polycarbophil. The composition is used for treating or preventing dysmenorrhea or premature labour. Using this composition and the method of treatment provides sufficient local levels of the drug to provide therapeutic efficacy, but avoids many untoward adverse events.
