PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium for a ZCAV method or the like in which fluctuation of magneto-optical information signals due to adjacent prepits is small and generation of errors does not increase, and to provide a method for manufacturing the substrate for a magneto-optical recording medium to be used for the above medium. SOLUTION: As for the substrate for a magneto-optical recording medium, a material formed by injection molding under specified conditions is used, and a magneto-optical recording film is formed on the obtained substrate. A dense prepit part having at least >=2×105 pieces/mm2 prepit density is formed in a part of a plurality of tracks on the substrate. When the magneto-optical signals detected from the tracks are measured as changes in the quantity of reflected light of a focused beam irradiating the tracks, ratio a/A of the fluctuation degree (a) of the magneto-optical signals detected in the track region within 10 tracks from the dense prepit part to the amplitude (A) of the magneto-optical signals detected in the track region at 10 tracks distance or more from the dense prepit part satisfies a/A<20%.
