PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize low voltage driving of a polymer/liquid crystal composite optical modulation device. SOLUTION: The device consists of a pair of substrates each having an electrode and at least one of which is a transparent substrate and a polymer/ liquid crystal composite layer held between the substrates. The liquid crystal component consists of a mixture of a nematic liquid crystal and a smectic liquid crystal, and both liquid crystals are preferably achiral.
