PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator of a projector, which can suppress loss of light utilization efficiency and irregular color caused by the combination dispersion of optical parts and thereby can improve brightness and display grade at screen projection time. SOLUTION: The illuminator of the projector is provided with a light source generating white light, a reflector reflecting light emitted from the light source, a polarizing element making polarizing directions of beams from the reflector uniform, a first laminated wavelength plate which rotates the polarization direction of light which passed through the polarizing element at a specific wavelength region by 90 deg., a first dichroic mirror which separates a first primary color from a second primary color and a third primary color among three primary colors of light passed through the first laminated wavelength plate, a second laminated wavelength plate which rotates a polarization direction, in a specific wavelength region of the second primary color light and the third primary color light reflected by or transmitted through the first dichroic mirror by 90 deg., and a second dichroic mirror which separates the light transmitted through the second laminated wavelength plate to the second primary color and the third primary color.
