PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tamping device capable of attaching an importance to accurate harmony in the vertical direction between a main track and a branch track of a switch. SOLUTION: This tamping machine 1 for tamping a track 4 is a track lifting unit adjustable in the vertical direction by a driving device 16 and includes a track lifting unit 17 arranged just in front of the tamping unit concerning with the direction of operation of the tamping machine between rail undercarriages. The track lifting unit plays the role that the main track 32 on which the rail undercarriage runs and which forms a track face 39 is arranged horizontally in a row. The tamping machine 1 is provided with an auxiliary lifting device 18 for lifting the branch track 27 of the switch 28 branched from the main track 32 and a common measuring system 20 for controlling and lifting the switch 28 with respect to the track lifting unit 17 and the auxiliary lifting device 18. The common measuring system 20 consists of a measuring transmitter 23 which is in contact with the main track 32 and forms a reference line 38 formed by beam light and extending in parallel with the track face 39 and a measuring receiver 35 in contact with the branch track 27 to record the reference line 38.
