PURPOSE: Provided are novel 2,2-diethyl-6,6-dimethyl- and 2,6-diethyl-2,3,6-trimethyl-1-substituted piperid-4-yl carboxylate, carbamate and urea compounds and corresponding N-oxyls which are used in polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. CONSTITUTION: The novel compounds are represented by the formulae(1a) and (2a), wherein Y is -O-CO-R1, -C-CO-NH-R1, -N(R3)-CO-R1, N(R3)-CO-NH-R1 or -N(COR1)(COR2); R1, R2 and X are defined as in the description. These compounds effectively control polymerization of a monomer.
