The brake unit has a braking surface(36) applied to the wheel hub(14) concentrically to the wheel axle(10) and against which lies a brake ring element(38) located in a housing(6) covering the braking surface. The brake ring element has two spaced apart end sections, the first fixed in the brake housing, and the other connected to a Bowden cable connected to a brake operating handle. The braking surface is provided on an annular component(16) form-fitted to and co-axial with the wheel hub.
